Neil Sauter emailed me last year. “I’m a professional stilt walker and a clown, and I’d like to do the marathon on stilts.” I replied, “No kidding, they PAY you to walk on stilts? But Neil and thousands of other runners raise MILLIONS of dollars for charities every year….

Every weekend, somewhere in America LIVES ARE CHANGING.It seems like yesterday that I was training for my first marathon. Chicago, 1995. That was before I joined any running club or had runner friends who would help drag me out of bed. It was a goal that I knew would change my life. And so it has.

From my mailbox
Four years ago I couldn’t make it around the track one time. I had Type 2 Diabetes, now my diabetes is cured and I am trying my first marathon
2 years ago I weighed over 300 pounds and was lucky to be able to walk 2 miles in one hour. I have dropped 90 pounds and 111 inches since then and am now running.
Running might not be “THE CURE” to everything, but it IS a step in the right direction…..

I love the Olympics. The speed, the grace, the agility are inspiring. We watch and sometimes dream of being one of those great athletes. But for most of us it isn’t in the cards. But there are other athletes, not the lean hard-bodied elites that we see on TV. They’re the tens of thousands of everyday people who just go out there and do what’s necessary.
It isn’t just the hardbodied athletes that are making the difference…

I'm not an elite athlete [1:01m]:

Normally I hate making girls cry, but sometimes I have to make an exception. Listen to Jenny’s story. It’s nice.

Just the time everything seems to be going great, life can take an unexpected turn. We have a major foul-up of some kind. Maybe we caused it. Maybe it was an act of nature. Maybe it was something in between.

The older I get, the better I get. Or at least I like to think so. Every year, as I run more miles and have new adventures, there’s a cumulative effect to the training. Every year gets better.

Getting better every year. [1:02m]:

Some people don’t just get older, they get BETTER! Remember when you thought your grandparents were old? That was when they were MY AGE NOW. And I’m thinking OLD is a long time from now. It’s all a matter of perspective and ATTITUDE!
